Firmenprofil
Kebony is a Norwegian company aiming to be a leading wood brand and marketing organisation underpinned by a number of proven wood modification technologies for producing wood of superior quality that is both environmentally friendly and cost effective. Our patent protected processes yield products that deliver major improvements in durability, dimensional stability and other physical and mechanical properties, at the same time as being aesthetically pleasing and suitable for a multitude of applications and designs – encompassing both indoor and outdoor applications. In many ways, Kebony resembles teak and other tropical varieties of wood. It is dark, and acquires a silver grey patina over time if left untreated. Notable benefits of Kebonization include its resistance to weather and wear, exceptionally good decay resistance and long life span. Quality improvements are achieved without the drawbacks associated with traditional impregnation methods which are why we apply the Swan eco-label (the official Nordic eco-label, introduced by the Nordic Council of Ministers). The liquid used in the production process contains a bio-based substance which forms a stable solid inside the wood and makes Kebony much harder than most other wood types. Our key market drivers arise from the following observations:1.Tropical hardwood: Traditional tropical hardwood resources are under pressure, and the usage is becoming unacceptable in many contexts, for both regulatory and environmental reasons. Construction firms, manufacturers and consumers are actively seeking alternatives, as tropical hardwoods have represented a large part of the market due to its durability, stability and low maintenance needs.2.Preservative treated wood: A global environment awakening is pushing for environmentally friendly alternatives to biocides and toxic chemicals for wood impregnation.3.Durability and performance: There is an increase both in demand and need for high performance and low maintenance wooden materials. Life-cycle considerations of both cost and ecological impact is becoming more transparent and explicit as part of invitation tenders. The Kebony technology has been developed over 10 years using scientists from Norway, Canada, Sweden, Netherlands, Germany and South Africa. The company built its first pilot plant in 2003 with the first full scale factory (25,000m³) being opened in 2009.The raw materials used are acquired from commercially managed forests with large timber harvests. All our suppliers hold certificates guaranteeing the origin of their timber. Currently, the raw materials being used are Southern Yellow Pine, Radiata Pine and Scotch Pine. Several other species have also proven suitable for our production process, including Maple.Historically, Kebony has mainly been tested and sold in the Scandinavian market. Since 2010 we have expanded quite rapidly into new markets in Europe, Asia and United States. Our ultimate goal is to establish Kebony as an independent market leader internationally. The key value driver will be to succeed in licensing the Kebony technology to manufacturers operating in specific geographical markets or segments.
